Lydia Baskin, the widow of brother Dr. Ronald Baskin, provided his Pledge Manual for the Upsilon Archives. For these 13 decades, the Creed has remained the steadfast foundation of our brotherhood. Baskin was a professor at UC Davis until he passed to the Adytum on High in 2011.

Upsilon graduates gathered at House of Meatballs in Westwood, and will pursue careers in law, military, neurology, communications/lobbying.

Adytum on High: Thomas Straeter, U.S.N. (ret.)
Brother Straeter passed to the Adytum on High in May as Upsilon’s oldest veteran. He was a Hollywood H.S. graduate, served in the U.S. Navy during the occupation of Japan following WWII, andreturned in 1947 to UCLA. He was initiated as an original member of the Old Men’s Club and friends with Fred Thornley, Merle Swanson, Jim Ross, Jack Taylor, and Jay Van Holt.

Garni award presented to Jonathan Dolgin
Brother Dolgen of the active chapter was honored with the Garni Arakelian Memorial Scholarship at Founders Day on Feb. 20. Kayleigh McPherson of the UCLA Foundation presented the award, which was established by the Arakelian family. Mr. Arakelian and Garni’s sister Astineh attended (with her husband and son).

Adytum on High: Capt. David Van Saun (USN)
Brother Van Saun passed to the Adytum on High in 2012 after a 30-year career in the Navy. He served in Vietnam as a Surface Warfare Officer, and was Commanding Officer of the Mayport Naval Station.

Brother Capps recounts shootout in San Bernardino
Sgt. Andy Capps led the firefight that took out the 2 terrorists. It was the first shootout of his police career.

The Old Men’s Club is going strong in its 7th decade. Bob Eggert, Bob Hillerman (Florida), Werner Benjamin (Indio), Fred Crebs (Ensendada, Mexico) and Dean Cameron gathered to watch the Bruins in Las Vegas. Ralph Rea also joined the trip.

Adytum on High: Daryl Gustafson
Brother Gustafson passed to the Adytum on High on Dec. 10, 2015. A native of the San Joaquin Valley, he graduated in 1957 and worked for General Telephone’s Office of Governmental Relations. He was a lifetime true blue Bruin and was married for 55 years to his campus sweetheart, the former Miss Doris Popovich.

Adytum on High: Robert Doumakes
Brother Doumakes, one of Upsilon’s last WWII veterans, passed to the Adytum on High on Aug. 9, 2015. He ran confectionary companies for many years, and was a wise father and grandfather for generations of his Greek family.
