    Adytum on High: Everett Rea, U.S. Navy veteran

    Brother Rea, Upsilon’s last WWII veteran, passed to the Adytum on High in November at age 94. He and his brother, Ralph Rea who lives in Orange County, have been committed to the fraternity for 60 years through financial donations and moral support for the younger brothers. Everett served in the Navy during WWII and fought at Guadacanal, and he celebrated his life afterwards with trips to Ireland.

    Steve Yu was recently promoted to CFO of the UCLA Law School, and he spoke to the active chapter in November about making the most of opportunities at a world-renowned school like UCLA.
    Asst. Dean Yu is the first minority on the executive management team at the school, a long way from his youth in far off Bakersfield!

    Admiral James Seely, one of Upsilon’s most decorative military veterans who flew combat missions in Vietnam, was interred at Arlington National Cemetery today (Nov. 6) with full honors and a Navy jet flyover. Upsilon alumnus Brad Reichard represented the brotherhood. He met Ted Seely, the Admiral’s son, who was touched that Sigma Pi made the effort to attend the final call.

    Sigma Pi-Upsilon brothers
    Dec 12, 1942, LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRADE LISTON R. COMER, JR, flying from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, was killed on a practice flight when his aircraft crashed into Mount Mou on the island of New Caledonia in the Pacific.

    May 24, 2943, 2nd LT ROBERT “ACE” CALKINS, of the 341st Bomb Squadron, died as a POW in a military hospital at Lucca, Italy.

    Sept 9, 1943, 1st LT DONALD L. HESSE, of the Air Transport Command, was killed with his aircraft exploded in mid-air over Accra, in what was then known as the ‘Gold Coast’ area of Africa.

    Jul. 17, 1944, Captain CHARLES LANE DONOVAN died on a stateside aircraft maintenance flight at Forestville, MD.

    A festive group of brothers gathered on Saturday night at Rocco’s Tavern in Westwood, owned by our own brother Josh Trifunovic. Attendees included two2 Past Sages (Spencer Van Ruiten, Mike Murrieta), Pablo Rivas back from his Ibiza trip, entertainment industry tycoons Ed Kwak and Josh Mandel, and Dr. Rainer Beck, who regaled with stories of his life in Germany and Egypt prior to coming to UCLA.

    Brother Dempsey (Y1964) traveled to Kenya for the second time on a mission with his parish, St. Monica’s Church in Santa Monica. The parish raises money and supports a school and church in the village.
    Dempsey is friends with John Gaydowski, Walt Maxwell and Dr. Rainer Beck, and looks forward to reuniting with them at Founders Day in 2018.
