    Adytum on High: Ben Rogers

    Brother Rogers, who played center for the Bruins basketball teams in the 1950s, passed to the Adytum on High in Sept. 2019. He later taught and coached at Troy H.S. in Fullerton.
    Rogers was the Bruins’ top scorer, rebounder and free-throw shooter as a senior in 1958, and he played alongside stars Willie Naulls and Rafer Johnson during his years. The Bruins were starting to emerge in the late 1950s, and in 1957, a good season was stopped in the NCAA playoffs by Univ. of San Francisco with Bill Russell and K.C. Jones and faced a tough rival in Cal under Pete Newell.

    Brother Jones passed to the Adytum on High on Jan. 5. He worked as an international banker and was retired in Orange County. He was friends with Thomas Kibler of San Marino and Kent Lewis of Santa Monica.

    Social chair Riley Johnson is captain of the Sigma Pi team which will dance for 24 hours straight to raise money for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

    Brother Josh King regaled the chapter with stories about Room #5, working in real estate in Santa Monica, and starting a pet hotel in his adventurous life this side of the Atlantic. King was an exchange student from England who never expected to join a fraternity, and clever enough to use his English accent to double-dip his Shakespeare essays while roommate Kyle Heckman (pictured) and other brothers drenched him in class during the Moonshiner Water Wars.

    A rip-roaring fun day of partying, brats, pink champagne and burgers with Upsilon brothers and their parents. Alumni Bill Kealey, David Finkel, David Zeicheck, and Rich Trout joined Sage Charlie’s mom, 2nd Counselor Nick R.’s mom, and Social Chair Riley’s dad in the party!

    Dr. Larry Crawshaw interrupted his graduate studies to serve in the Peace Corps in Nepal in the late 1960s. He was doused during the Holi festival during his “Endless Summer” trip, which included body-surfing in southern India.

    Brother Bader, the only Upsilon brother to serve in the California State Assembly, passed to the Adytum on High on Aug. 28.

    He was a generous donor to the brotherhood and provided keen political insight.
